The good news is that SMU is going to a bowl game for the third straight season. The bad news is that it could possibly be the last game that head coach June Jones is on the sidelines for the Mustangs. Jones has been interviewing for the vacant head coaching position at Arizona State University and while there have been no official statements, Jones is considered one of the frontrunners for the job.

Jones is known for turning around struggling football teams and his pass-happy offenses. Before he came to SMU, Jones was the head coach at Hawaii. He took the Warriors from 0-12 record in 1998 all the way to an undefeated season and a berth in the Sugar Bowl in 2007.

Jones' success at SMU is well-documented. His first year as head coach was a struggle, and the Mustangs finished 1-11. However, the following year, SMU finished the regular season at 7-5 and earned their first bowl invitation in 25 years. At the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the Mustangs crushed Nevada, 45-10.

This news comes on the heels of SMU earning their third consecutive bowl bid after finishing the 2011 season with a 7-5 record. SMU will be playing in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama against Pitt on January 7.
