The SMU women's golf team can finally breathe a sigh of relief after earning their first team since September 19, 2006. The team won the Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln by a single stroke over Redlands Community College.

There were a lot of "first's" for the Mustangs. Junior Felicia Espericueta notched her first individual career win; SMU got its first individual winner in Espericueta since 2009. And first year head coach Jeanne Sutherland won her first tournament with SMU.

"I'm extremely proud of the ladies on the team and of Felicia for her win," said Sutherland in an interview with smumustangs.com. "We want to create a culture of winning and this is a great start."

After settling for fifth place at the end of Day 1, the Mustangs ascended to second place by the end of Day 2 before seizing the victory on the final hole.

The team's next tournament will be the Badger Invitational on September 25 in Madison, Wisconsin.
