SMU's Ford Stadium is getting some shiny new parts

Wealthy SMU alumni and boosters have taken notice of the Mustangs' recent success on the football field and are rewarding the team and school with donations for renovating Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The improvements will cost about $3 million and includes upgrades to the team's locker room, team meeting rooms and a new playing surface.

The locker rooms will be outfitted with new lockers and updated graphic and audio/visual equipment. There will also be a new team lounge area. The team meeting rooms will get stadium-style seating and renovated positional meeting rooms.

In an interview with smumustangs.com, SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini said, "We are committed to competing at the highest level. Part of that commitment includes having top-notch facilities."

A majority of the funds were donated by Walter Umphrey, a former SMU student, in honor of his former teammate Garry Weber. Another alumnus, John Gorman, chipped in with $500,000. The remaining amount was funded by other various donors.
