Fresh off their 40-33 upset of former No. 20 TCU, the SMU Mustangs are garnering some national attention. The Mustangs received votes in the AP and Coaches Polls and are now ranked No. 34 in the nation. And now, the team has been honored with another national award this week.

SMU was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week by The Football Writers Associations of America for their first win over a ranked opponent in six seasons. It is the first under head coach June Jones and only the second since the Death Penalty was handed down.

The players have also been pulling in honors after the upset victory. Quarterback J.J. McDermott, who threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns, was named Rivals.com Conference USA Player of the Week. Wide receiver Darius Johnson, who caught 12 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns, was named Conference USA and ESPN.com Offensive Player of the Week.

The Mustangs have a bye week before returning home to take on the defending C-USA champions, the University of Central Florida, on Saturday, October 15 at 2:30 p.m.
