Southern Methodist University students who live near campus may want to start keeping a closer eye on their bicycles.

Recently, there was a increase in third-row seat thefts from vehicles in the Park Cities. Now, bicycles appear to be next item that has been targeted.

Here is a message that was sent out Tuesday by Highland Park spokesperson Lance Koppa about a recent increase of bicycle thefts in the Town:

"I was alerted this morning by one of our detectives that there has been a sudden increase in bicycle thefts. The individual(s) responsible for the offenses appear to be targeting high-end bicycles that are in plain view from the roadway. This includes detached or attached garages where the garage doors have been left open.  Bolt cutters have also been used to defeat bicycle locks.

Keep garage doors closed during times that the area is unattended. Document the serial number on each bicycle that you own (typically the serial number is stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket). Our investigators use the serial number to identify found property, stolen property, and connect suspect(s) to the criminal offense. Write down the make and model of your bicycle. Take a photo of your bike and any unique features or add-ons. Finally, call 911 immediately to report suspicious activity."
