Matt Doherty Out As SMU Men's Basketball Head Coach

SMU has fired men's basketball head coach Matt Doherty on Tuesday, March 13 after leading his squad to an underachieving season in 2011-2012. The Mustangs were 13-19 overall and were 4-9 in conference play. The team concluded the season by bowing out in the first round of the Conference USA tournament against Marshall.

Doherty came to the hilltop back in April of 2006 and was considered to be one of the most heralded coaches to ever come to SMU. In his head coaching career, Doherty has 11 postseason bids, eight NCAA tournament berths, seven conference titles, a Final Four appearance and was the 2001 Associated Press National Coach of the Year.

However, he was never able to take SMU basketball to the next level. In his six years at SMU, Doherty compiled a record of 80-109. Only once in his six years did SMU have a winning record - the 2010-2011 season. With Doherty's departure, the team and the school begin a new chapter in the basketball program.

With the school moving to the Big East Conference - one of the best basketball conferences in the nation - in 2013, the team and whomever it hires as the next head coach, will have a tough but exciting future ahead.
