As part of the “Aquatic Channels” exhibition program, the Hamon Arts Library will screen Carolina Caycedo and David de Rozas’ fictional documentary The Teachings of the Hands (2020). The film combines re-enactments of colonial occupation, landscape views, archival footage, environmental wounds, and indigenous marks on the stones, and uncovers recent infrastructural development with its deep roots in colonization. The storytelling assumes the contours of the voice of Juan Mancias, Chairman of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, who narrates Carrizo/Comecrudo histories interconnected with the Grande River, the Devils, and the land. In this way, the film overwrites Texas’ colonial cartography with indigenous cosmology, straying away from extractive economies' reductive understanding of the environment as resource and inert lifeless matter.
