In this 2022/23 concert season, we celebrate both great Russian composers' 150th anniversaries. The program is dedicated to their music. 24 Preludes, opus 11 is an outstanding set of miniatures, one of the most popular among Scriabin's early compositions, followed by his two-movement Fourth Sonata in F sharp Major, Opus 30. Rachmaninoff's first sonata, completed in Dresden (1906), was inspired by Liszt's Faust Symphony. While the programmatic elements are more overt in Liszt's composition, the three movements in both works are musical portraits of prominent characters from Goethe's Faust: Faust himself, his lover Gretchen, and the devil Mephistopheles, respectively.
