Fresh off their 40-33 upset of former No. 20 TCU, the SMU Mustangs are garnering some national attention. The Mustangs received votes in the AP and Coaches Polls and are now ranked No. 34 in the nation. And now, the team has been honored with another national award this week.

SMU was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week by The Football Writers Associations of America for their first win over a ranked opponent in six seasons. It is the first under head coach June Jones and only the second since the Death Penalty was handed down.

The players have also been pulling in honors after the upset victory. Quarterback J.J. McDermott, who threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns, was named Rivals.com Conference USA Player of the Week. Wide receiver Darius Johnson, who caught 12 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns, was named Conference USA and ESPN.com Offensive Player of the Week.

The Mustangs have a bye week before returning home to take on the defending C-USA champions, the University of Central Florida, on Saturday, October 15 at 2:30 p.m.

In the post-Death Penalty era, the SMU football has only ever beaten a top-25 team twice. The first time was against TCU in 2005 when the Horned Frogs were still flying high after beating the Oklahoma Sooners on the road in Norman. And the second time came this past Saturday in a thrilling game that went into overtime before the Mustangs eked out a 40-33 win over the same Horned Frogs.

SMU (4-1) is off to its best start since 1986 when it started the season 5-1 and the critics have noticed. In the most recent polls, the Mustangs actually received five votes in the AP poll and 10 points in the Coaches poll; overall, SMU is ranked No. 34 in the nation. On the flip side, TCU (3-2) fell out of the top-25 for the first time in three years.

Quarterback J.J. McDermott, since taking over for last year’s starter Kyle Padron, has shown remarkable growth. The senior is undefeated in his four starts and has now eclipsed 300 yards passing in three straight games. He has also thrown for at least three touchdowns in the past two games, alleviating some of the scoring burden off of running back Zach Line.

In fact, Saturday’s game was the first one this season that Line didn’t rush for a touchdown. He came into the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in rushing touchdowns with 11. However, he was still a force on the ground, grinding out 120 yards on 21 carries. However, his biggest contribution was on special teams: on the kickoff to begin the second half, Line tackled TCU kickoff returner Greg McCoy and forced a fumble that teammate Chris Parks recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. The play swung momentum back in the Mustangs’ favor and gave the team a 24-10 lead.

One of the biggest concerns for SMU coming into the game was the absence of leading receiver Cole Beasley. However, McDermott and wide receivers Darius Johnson, Terrance Wilkerson and Jeremy Johnson easily picked up the slack. Darius Johnson led the team with 12 catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Wilkerson got the Mustangs rolling early with a 71-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter to put SMU up 14-0. And Jeremy Johnson’s first touchdown of the season is one he’ll always remember: a 19-yard touchdown reception in overtime that proved to be the game winner. McDermott threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns and was named Rivals.com Conference USA Player of the Week.

The Mustangs have a bye week, which they will use to recuperate, study film and savor their hard fought victory. The road doesn’t get easier for the SMU though. They’re next game is against defending C-USA champions Central Florida on Saturday, October 15. Kickoff is at 2:30.

The SMU football team (3-1) has rattled off three straight victories after a poor season opening showing at College Station against then-No. 8 Texas A&M. However, they face a daunting task this Saturday, October 1 against Gary Patterson and No. 20 TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet.

While no one really wants to remember the last game SMU played against a ranked opponent, it is unlikely the Mustangs will have a better shot at knocking off a top-25 team. SMU always plays their cross-town rivals with intensity and this squad is one of the best since the glory days of the 1980’s. Add in the fact that TCU lost quarterback Andy Dalton to the NFL and has struggled against the passing game lately and it becomes a perfect recipe for an upset.

Head coach Junes Jones will need his team to be running the Run and Shoot offense on all cylinders and that starts with senior quarterback J.J. McDermott. Since replacing Kyle Padron as the starter, McDermott has continued to gain confidence with each start and is now currently 10th in the nation in total passing yards. McDermott has only thrown four touchdowns on the season but a big reason for is running back Zach Line.

Line is currently second in the nation in rushing touchdowns with 11 and is 14th in the nation in average rushing yards per game with 115.75. Last season, Line was the leading rusher in Conference USA and finished second in school history behind Eric Dickerson with 1,391 yards.

But, the SMU passing game has been dealt a major blow with the likely loss of leading receiver Cole Beasley. Beasley injured his right knee in last week’s 42-0 victory over C-USA foe Memphis and is doubtful for the game. The Mustangs will have to rely heavily on Darius Johnson and Terrance Wilkerson to fill the void left by Beasley.

The SMU defense has regrouped nicely after the 46-14 defeat at the hands of the Aggies in week one. The team has benefitted from playing lackluster offenses in UTEP, Northwestern State and Memphis. The matchup against TCU will be the first real challenge the squad has faced since Texas A&M.

The game is being held in Fort Worth at Amon G. Carter stadium. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.

The Mustangs struck first in the heated rivalry between cross-town rivals SMU and TCU that will culminate in Saturday's slugfest football game commonly known as The Battle for the Iron Skillet. Normally, in the days leading up to the game, students from both schools sneak onto the other campus to pull pranks and other mischief. But with police cracking down on both ends, the schools have tried a more civil approach to get fans excited for the game.

The Horned Frogs challenged the Mustangs to a race: the first school to get 1,000 donors between September 9 and September 29 wins. Donations benefit the SMU Scholarship Fund to help more students get to the Hilltop. However, donors can also choose where they want their donations to go, such as the Mustang Club, a specific school or even the libraries.

SMU crushed TCU in the contest with a final count of 1,000 to 853. The Mustangs' victory will be broadcasted at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday in front of tens of thousands of TCU and SMU fans.

The SMU vs. TCU game will kick off on Saturday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m.

According to a tweet from SMU men's basketball head coach Matt Doherty, Dallas Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd is working out at SMU right now. Although Doherty didn't specify where, it is highly likely that Kidd is at the Crum Basketball Center next to Moody Coliseum.

Jason Kidd is not the first celebrity to make an appearance at SMU. Several of the Mavericks have used the Crum Basketball Center before and actor Owen Wilson is known to the use SMU swimming pools on occasion whenever he's in town.

If you see Kidd and manage to get a picture of him, submit it to BubbleLife. We'll put your picture up and give you credit for it.

The SMU football team recorded its first shutout victory in over a decade with a 42-0 victory over the University of Memphis on Saturday, September 24. The Mustangs improve to 3-1 on the season and are perfect in Conference USA with a 2-0 record.

The Mustangs were never threatened by the Tigers throughout the entire game. SMU scored on its first two drives with running back Zach Line punching it in from the 1-yard line both times. In all, Line rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Memphis managed only four first-downs the entire first half of the game. The Tigers made it to the red zone just once all game and ended up turning the ball over on downs.

Quarterback J.J. McDermott continues to gain confidence and poise with each start. The senior quarterback has won all three games he has started and once SMU had established the run game against Memphis, McDermott picked apart the Tigers' secondary all game. He finished with 357 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.

The Mustangs' defense was aggressive and assertive all game. Memphis actually finished with negative yardage on the ground with -14 yards total. The aerial attack for the Tigers was only slightly more efficient; quarterback Taylor Reed completed 17 passes for 153 yards and he was sacked four times.

SMU now faces the most difficult portion of their 2011 schedule, starting with a trip to face in-state rival TCU. The Horned Frogs have the same record as the Mustangs and are currently ranked No. 20 in the nation. After that, SMU will play UCF (2010 C-USA champions), Southern Miss (2010 C-USA East runner up) and Tulsa (2010 C-USA West runner up).

The Mustangs kick off against the Horned Frogs on Saturday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m.

For nearly as long as Yamaha Corporation of America has been in the United States, they have been partnered up with Southern Methodist University. And now, after 50 years of cooperation, Yamaha presented SMU with a 50th Anniversary Year Partnership Award on Friday, September 23.

The award was presented to José Bowen, dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, and Sam Holland, director of the Division of Music. Eastern Regional Manager Fred Kleid and District Manager Michael Inman of Yamaha's Keyboard Division represented Yamaha Corporation of America.

"This award is only given to a select group of institutions who are leaders in incorporating technology and electronics in their music programs, and whose faculty are doing outstanding work in the community outreach," said Inman.

Berklee College of Music in Boston and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music are among the few other recipients of the award. However, Inman noted that SMU and North Texas in general is special in the appreciation for music.

Inman said, "This is 'Piano Town America.' The area has nationally recognized university piano programs and genuine community interest, so many people here truly enjoy and seek out piano performances, more so than in other areas of the country."
