SMU Lecture Saturday on Rediscovery of Largest Carnivorous Dinosaur

DALLAS (SMU)- Paleontologist Nizar Ibrahim will discuss his rediscovery of the largest known carnivorous dinosaur at SMU Saturday, Feb. 28. Part of the 2015 Charles E. Finsley Lecture Series, Ibrahim will speak 7:30 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Center, 3140 Dyer Street.

Ibrahim has discovered new remains of the dinosaur Spinosaurus aegyptiacus after the only proof of the dinosaur’s existence had been destroyed in the bombing of Munich during WWII. Ibrahim will discuss his discovery of the new, more complete specimen found in Morocco.

Spinosaurus is classified as semiaquatic, the only swimming dinosaur capable of hunting in water as well as on land. The massive terrestrial predator, the largest currently known, surpasses even Tyrannosaurus rex in size.

The discovery of the new specimen of Spinosauras and its reinterpretation as a swimming dinosaur was covered in the NOVA television documentary “Bigger Than T. Rex”. Ibrahim’s discovery was also featured in the October 2014 National Geographic magazine and was named the ninth top news story of 2014 by Discover Magazine.

Ibrahim is one of National Geographic’s Emerging Explorers and was recently named a 2015 TED Fellow.  He is a postdoctorate research fellow at the University of Chicago.

The lecture will be held in the lower level of the Hughes-Trigg Student Center of Southern Methodist University. Seating is limited and advance reservations are highly recommended. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $20 general admission and $10 with student ID.

A reception for Ibrahim will take place following the lecture, which is sponsored by SMU’s Institute for Earth and Man and the Dallas Paleontological Society.
