CitySquare Launches Up Close Series with Speaker Nicholas D. Kristof

CitySquare is launching Up Close with CitySquare, a speaker series designed to provide Dallas with the opportunity to hear from authors, sports figures, and social influencers who support the fight against poverty. The first event, a seated breakfast, takes place on March 19th from 7 – 8:30 a.m. in the Martha Pollock Mack Grand Ballroom at SMU and features Pulitzer Prize winning, New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof.

A seasoned journalist and human rights advocate, Kristof gives voice to the voiceless. Often called the "reporter’s reporter”, he has traveled China, Africa, India, and South Asia, offering compassionate glimpses into global health, poverty, and gender in the developing world. Kristof has lived on four continents, reported on six, and traveled to more than 150 countries, all 50 states, every Chinese province, and every main Japanese island. In his most recent book, A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity, Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn look around the world at people working to make it a better place, and show readers the numerous ways this work can be supported. PBS has recently aired a three-part series based on A Path Appears. Kristof empowers audiences to not only understand the world we live in, but to transform the lives of others within it, ultimately delivering a message of hope.

CitySquare’s commitment to fighting poverty includes raising awareness about the issues surrounding poverty’s causes and effects. Up Close with CitySquare featuring Nicholas D. Kristof is an opportunity to spend the morning with an extraordinary thinker and chronicler of humanity. CitySquare CEO Larry James describes it as “a conversation you can’t miss.”

Since 1988 CitySquare has been at the forefront of vital issues and concerns of the community in which we live and work. From its beginning as Central Dallas Food Pantry, CitySquare has grown to be one of the largest, most effective social services organizations in Texas, serving more than 50,000 unduplicated neighbors each year through 14 different programs. This year, CitySquare opened the long-awaited Opportunity Center, a gateway of opportunity for underserved communities in south and east Dallas. The Opportunity Center is home to numerous essential services for neighbors trying to change the trajectory of their lives in one easily accessed location. A community of neighbors standing for justice and equality for all and with the belief that its resources belong to the community, CitySquare‘s work flows out of its ecumenical and inclusive faith.
