Tonight, aerial spraying for mosquitoes will happen in the Park Cities, in an effort to help stop the spread of West Nile virus.

The spraying is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. and will cover all of Highland Park and University Park.

As precautionary measures for the aerial spraying, residents are encouraged to stay inside and keep pets indoors while it is happening; use soap and water to wash skin and clothes that have come in contact with the spray; clean fruits and vegetables that have been exposed to the spray; and make sure ornamental fish ponds are covered prior to the spraying.

Though local residents are asked to take precautions, the chemical that will be sprayed is the same as what has been used by the communities for ground fogging in the past, according to the City of University Park. Also, the aerial spraying uses a lower concentration of the product — "less than an ounce per acre" — than the spraying that is done on the ground because aerial spraying distributes the product more efficiently.

Also, swimmers should be aware that the Holmes Aquatic Center pool will close for the evening at 7:30 p.m., according to the City of University Park.

In addition to the Park Cities, a portion of Dallas, stretching north and east to I-635, west to the Dallas North Tollway and south to I-30 will be included in tonight's spraying, according to the City of Dallas. The total coverage area in Dallas, including the Park Cities, will be 49,000 acres.
