A performance of traditional shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) music by master Stan "Kakudo" Richardson. The Zen practice of playing the shakuhachi has been transmitted for centuries from teacher to student. It is not known who composed most of the original pieces; they are played as a meditation practice.
As such, they are intended to bring the player to full awareness of the nature of reality, of the interdependence and also the independence of ourselves and the universe
Stan Richardson is currently head of Mujuan Shakuhachi Dojo in Texas, a branch of his teacher's school based in Kyoto and founded by Yoto Kurahashi. His recording Shakuhachi Meditation Music is one of the bestselling records of solo shakuhachi music by a gaijin - non-Japanese.
He has appeared at many notable area venues and was a featured performer and teacher at the World Shakuhachi Festival in 1998 and 2004. He has performed and recorded with the Turtle Creek Chorale and performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at a gala event featuring renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
